Mindfulness, energy awareness and breath work From a place of nervous system relaxation we have more choice about how to be. Using these tools, you can learn to move from fight/flight/freeze (sympathetic nervous system response) to a more parasympathetic, relaxed response. This can have a profound impact on your health, as inflammation from cortisol produced in chronic stress is a major precursor for a number of diseases. Cortisol also increases current disease symptoms and leads everyone to feel frayed, on-edge and exhausted. Stress is a part of being human, however, we can learn to regulate our response to it so it works in our favor. With a calm nervous system, rather than reacting, you have the power to step back and make a choice about what you want to do and how you want to feel in yourself. Somatic education Learning about and gaining access to our voluntary body processes is empowering. Somatic education helps you become aware of things you have control over so you can choose to do what's in your best interest. Through hands on coaching and dialogue the patterns become apparent. For example, maybe there's recurring pain in your right shoulder blade but no clear reason for it. Through somatic education, you may realize that you're tensing that area as you drive, or to brace against conflict, or to help hold yourself together when overwhelmed, etc. With this understanding, you now have more choice of how to be in your body to increase your well-being rather than suffering. (For some, additional help is needed for the underlying psychological reasons of the physical pattern and referrals are made to body-aware psychotherapists.) Therapeutic movement Structural integrity creates the safety needed for true freedom. The basic idea is to create decompression in the joints and the strength to maintain it. This is achieved in part through tensegrity (great article here: https://www.anatomytrains.com/fascia/tensegrity/). By actively moving in contrasting directions, we create an elongated (eccentric) strength that helps us maintain this spacious integrity. This leads to decreased pain, less wear and tear on the joints, true flexibility (as opposed to hypermobility), coordination, balance and more optimal neuromuscular patterns. The body becomes like an earthquake proof home...strong, resilient and adaptable. The main technique used is the GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM®with additional elements from Pilates, yoga and dance. Developing your body/home this way creates more safety as you navigate life and empowers you with greater freedom to choose how you want to be in the world.
